CHARITYSMITH was created in 1994 in memory of Douglas F. Smith with the
purpose of providing support and edification within the community. It is
established as a pathway for generosity and contribution to those people and
efforts that merit financial assistance and encouragement. Originally, CHARITYSMITH consisted of a single
scholarship presented annually at a small dinner in December. Over the past
eight years, the Foundation has grown to four
scholarships and one award.
In addition, the
Annual Green Tie
Dinner, which raises money
to buy toys for underprivileged children, flourished from its
initial 50 participants to an expected 600 this year.

Douglas F. Smith Memorial Scholarship for Students, Artists, & Athletes (Est. 1994) Presented at the Annual Green Tie Dinner, this scholarship is awarded to an artist, athlete, or student. As a general guideline, recipients are people or efforts notable for an understanding of excellence demonstrated through persistence and sincere hard work. As such, they exemplify the concept of victory as earned in monotonous and committed moments, where often alone and unrecognized, the winner earns his right to win. The Douglas F. Smith Memorial Foundation is proud to present an endowment that recognizes and supports such students, artists, and athletes.
The DFS Memorial Scholarship has been offered since 1995 to recipients selected by the Board of Trustees. Nominations for this award should be emailed to the foundation along with a brief essay supporting the proposed recipient. We are always looking for eligible recipients for this and other awards. | Duke Peterson Memorial Freestyle Scholarship (Est. 2002) |
|
Duke Peterson Memorial Freestyle Scholarship (Est. 2002) Duke Peterson was a hardworking, genuine, and determined person. His very presence exuded confidence and he was noteworthy for inspiring others to present their best. Duke was an athlete, a coach, a business owner, brother, son, and importantly, a husband and father of four. In the summer of 2001, while coaching his son's little league game, Duke Peterson suffered a heart attack and died. This scholarship has been created in his memory, as a tribute to the great coach and friend that Duke Peterson was, and still is, to so many. The goal is to provide an athlete with the chance to work as hard and passionately at freestyle skiing as Duke so often did himself. ...We remember you Duke, and on the good days out there on the hill, we ski with you in our hearts...
In October of 2002, the first annual recipient of the Duke Peterson Memorial Freestyle Scholarship will be selected from the members of the Squaw Valley Freestyle Ski Team. This athlete will receive funding for complete team and coaching fees as well as all event entry fees for the entire ski season. Click here for more pictures and information...
